THE ARTIST OF THE BEAUTIFUL

The Artist of the Beautiful by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a short story that follows a creator through his process of creating beauty in a world that ultimately cares more about utilty. With this design, the body copy moves throughout the pages in a way to reflect the creator's attempts and failtures to create his something beautiful. The format, binding, type, and paper choice touch on Hawthorne's theme of beauty versus utility. The large format and screw binding relate to utility, while the softer off-white paper and delicate type hind at the beauty the creator so desperately tried to create.
